Teignbridge District Council has announced the winners of its social media competition inviting residents to provide names for a new fleet of recycling vehicles.
Specialist Fleet Services Ltd (SFS), the council’s fleet and workshop partner for over 20 years, delivered 21x brand new Romaquip Kerbsort recycling vehicles as part of a 56-vehicle replacement programme for the council, which commenced in April this year.
Over 300 entries from adults and children were received and the winning names include *Big Dumpy, Binderella, Dusbin Hoffman, Taylorry Swift and Lamborgreenie.
On Saturday 26 October 2024 a selection of winners joined members of the waste and recycling team at the recycling depot in Newton Abbot to be presented with certificates and officially name their vehicle. Prizes and stickers for the competition were sponsored by Romaquip and SFS
Winners got the chance to learn more about how their named vehicles will improve the council’s recycling service.
Where possible, the names for the lorries have been chosen for routes close to where the winner’s live, so winners will be able to see the vehicle they named out and about working.
Cllr Peter Williams, Executive Member for Recycling, Household Waste & Environmental Health said, “We had a great response to the competition to name our new fleet of vehicles. There were so many fun and creative names, from children and adults across Teignbridge, it was hard for the panel to decide.
“We’re very pleased with the names chosen as they give the new fleet a distinct identity, and we can’t wait to see them around Teignbridge providing their services.
“We know most of our residents already recycle lots of their waste, but we know there is still more many can do. The new vehicles will help us provide a more efficient recycling collection service and hopefully encourage people to recycle more, more often.”
Bob Sweetland, Managing Director, SFS: “We have been working with Teignbridge District Council since 2002 and we are delighted to provide this new fleet of recycling vehicles as well as support the naming competition.”
The new vehicles have three different body configurations to achieve the balance between access and maximizing storage space for collected materials. Crews sort the waste into different compartments as they go, minimising the need for further sorting and maximising the recyclability of the materials collected. The new trucks have improved compaction for cardboard and space for food waste meaning they can collect from more households before needing to be emptied.
SFS celebrated its 30-year anniversary in 2023 and has an extensive track record in delivering fleet and workshop management solutions to local authorities across the UK. The company runs a nationwide network of workshops and operates its own specialist vehicle hire division, CTS Hire, for the provision of short to medium term municipal vehicles.
